Wilton L. Chase - Japan 1951

Kumsong (Mouse) - Jan/Feb 1952. We had what was called a "clam up" for 7 days - no one could show themselves in day-time. No fires, only heat pills and K-rations. When it was over, we were pretty dirty. I made up quite a story for Frances (my wife) about this mouse. I got off guard one morning here and was getting into my sleeping bag when a N. Korean or chink
came by and sold the other guys candles for cigs, but I kept my rifle on him. The guys "ha ha'd" me, but he got caught going back through the lines. He had a map of our area and of guns. The one that caught him went on R&R for
a week to Japan.

Uncle Dan's Huddle - On the road to reserve area General Dan Huddleston took command of the 8th army and he changed things some. The outfits in the rear got plenty of sand bags, but not up front where needed. I stopped here once and I think he had them tear it down. He wasn't liked very well by forward troops. I had a pipe here and I saw later how I resembled Gen. Mac Arthur. I was glad I didn't look like Huddleton.

Gibraltar Showers About
a mile behind our lines. (After returning from being wounded) This unit was rebuilt by 10 Korean laborers and myself Concrete floors for old clothes change, shower tent and new old clothes change tent along the side of a stream for fresh water. The sign and poles for the arch were made by my design and cut down from woods behind service Co.area. Walter Kelembock (LA) painted the sign. He was very nervous, should not have been in the service let
alone on the lines. We made 2 (shower units) and started a third one in a new reserve area, but I rotated home ward.
