William A.Williams,Jr. was a cadet in Flying training class 49C. His first assignment was to 20th AF at Naha Air Base, Okinawa. He was in the 16th Fighter Intercepter Squadron, 51st FIG, 51st FIW. The squadron left Okinawa for Itasuki Air Base, Japan on Sept 22,1950. A total of 61 F-80's and 2 T-33's departed
Okinawa and flew to Itazuke, Japan without the loss of a plane.He flew his first combat mission a few days after arrival there. The 51st Wing moved up to Kimpo Air Base in October. On 2 January 1951 they evacuated Kimpo for
Itazuki as the enemy was just a very short distance from Kimpo. On about 7 Jan 51, he was sent to Teagu, Korea to start his tour as A FAC with the 27th Inf Reg. Most of the time with them was spent in the area around Pyongtek, Osan, and Suwan directing air strikes. When he left after 28
days he found that the 51st wing had been moved to Tsuiki Air Base, Japan. he was there until he completed his 100 combat missions in the F-80C. His first duty station after returning to the States was at Nellis AFB, Nevada as an instructor in the Fighter Gunnery School. He retired as a LTC after about 27 years in the AF, AF Res and the Air National Guard.
