The following photos on this page
are ofthe Sandbag Castle area. The photos came from
various individuals from the 224th Inf Regt. Most all the
photos were taken on the 28th and 29th of July 1953. The
day after the war ended.









Sgt. Francis Connors dramatically
planted the American flag on the top of snow-covered
Sandbag Castle on the eastern Korean front. The Chinese
Communists tried to cut it down with a barrage of gunfire,
but Connors lashed the flag firmly to the tree. As he
turned to crawl back to the safety of his own lines, an
Army photographer got this picture.
